A beautiful traditional Serbian festive cake made on the eve of Christmas or Easter. It is easy to prepare. The bread is very tasty and soft. Follow recipe.
Ingredients: easy, total time: 120 min., 10 servings
1 kg of flour
1 cube of fresh yeast, /40 g
little salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 bag of baking powder/ 10 g
lukewarm water as needed
1 egg yolk
butter or margarine for coating the tin
Preparation:
Mix yeast, sugar, salt, lukewarm water and 2 tablespoons of flour and leave in a warm place about 25 min.
Set aside 1–2 cups or 1 kg of flour so that the dough can be kneaded.
Put 1 bag baking powder and yeast in the rest of the flour, which should have already “awakened”. Knead the dough with the addition of warm water.
Beat the dough with all your strength so that the bubbles remain and grow better.
When the dough is well combined, leave it to rise in a warm room temperature, covered with a cotton cloth, about 1 hour.
Knead a couple of times in a plastic bow. When the dough finally rises, separate a small part for making decorations, and move the rest once more and put it in a deep mold that has previously been greased with grease or margarine.
The braid and other decorations should be made as soon as possible until the cake is over-fermented, and care should be taken while decorating to make sure that the cake is not pressed hard because it will not grow evenly and will be crooked.
Whisk the egg yolks with a little salt and coat the cake
Preheat the oven to 250 °C and bake for 10 minutes, then reduce to 170 °C and bake for another 35 minutes.
Buon appetito!
